He served as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge from 1979 to 2009 and was director of research at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the time of his death. He was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease in 1963, which eventually paralyzed him. Girlfriend / Spouse

Stephen Hawking dated –

  1. Jane Wilde (1964-1995) – Stephen Hawking met Jane Wilde (later became an author and educator), who was his sister’s friend shortly after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. Stephen was a graduate student at that time at Cambridge. In October 1964, they got engaged, and it was this engagement that gave Stephen a will to live. They got married in July 1965. The couple had three children son Robert (b. May 1967), daughter Lucy (b. 1970), and son Timothy (b. 1979). By the mid-1980s, Jane had developed romantic feelings for organist Jonathan Hellyer Jones, whom she had met at a church choir. Hawking allowed that affair to exist as long as Jane still loved him. In the meantime, Stephen had developed an affection for one of his nurses, Elaine Mason, and told Jane in 1990 that he was leaving her for Mason. Their divorce was finalized in 1995. However, Stephen did get closer to Jane after his divorce from Mason.
  2. Elaine Mason (1995-2006) – Hawking grew close to his nurse Elaine Mason in the late 1980s. Stephen informed his first wife, Jane that he intended to marry Elaine and, in 1995, a couple of months after his divorce from Jane, he married Elaine. In the early 2000s, Stephen’s family members were worried about him being physically abused. However, police investigations amounted to nothing as Stephen declined to make any official complaint. Later, his family members and close friends were excluded from his life. Stephen finally divorced Mason in 2006.
