Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer who played for the national cricket team from the 1970s to the 1980s. During his decade long cricket stint, Sunil was regarded as one of the best Test innings batsmen in the history of Test cricket. He is a record-setting batsman who once held the record for the highest number of centuries made in Test innings and also for scoring centuries in both innings of Test innings thrice.

  1. At birth, Sunil was mistakenly exchanged with the baby of a fisherwoman. It was his uncle who had spotted the mole near his left ear at the time of his birth and found it to be missing the following day. Later, both infants were returned to their families.
  2. He was raised in Bombay by a family of Marathi heritage.
  3. In 1966, while playing for his school, he was named “India’s Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the year.”
  4. Sunil played his first-class match against an XI from Dungarpur as a team member of the Vazir Sultan Colts XI at the 1966-1967 match.
  5. He played the Ranji Trophy from Bombay.
  6. Sunil inherited his love for the sport as his sister Nutan and Madhav were also well-known cricketers.
  7. In 1974, during a match at Old Trafford against England, Gavaskar asked umpire Dickie Bird to trim his hair as they hampered with his view.
  8. Initially, he had wanted to be a wrestler as he was a huge fan of Maruthi Vader. However, his need for one of India’s test team pullovers made him change his mind.
  9. In 1985, Sunil co-founded India’s first sports management company under the title, Professional Management Group. However, in 2017, Sunil was asked by the BCCI to choose between sports management or commentary. According to sources, Sunil may have shut down the sports management wing but kept the other sections of the company running.
  10. There is a calypso in his named titled, “Gavaskar Calypso” which was sung by a Trinidadian calypso singer, Lord Relator.
  11. Gavaskar is very afraid of dogs. He once locked himself in a phone booth as English cricketer Ian Botham stood in front of it with a large dog.
  12. He is a strong believer in the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
