Thanasi Kokkinakis Facts

  1. He had first developed an interest in tennis when he was about 7 years old after he had started playing the sport recreationally with his brother.
  2. During his junior career, he had reached a peak ranking of number 10. In 2013, he had won the Wimbledon boys’ doubles title and had finished as the boys’ singles runner-up at both the Australian Open and the US Open.
  3. His breakthrough year in top-flight tennis was 2015 when he had reached his peak ATP  rankings in both the singles and the doubles formats and had also recorded his best Grand Slam performances in both the singles and the doubles formats. However, the year had ended on a sour note for him as he was forced to undergo shoulder surgery to repair an ongoing injury.
  4. The surgery had limited him to just a solitary singles match from November 2015 to May 2017. He would later admit that the injury was caused by vanity as he had tried to lift excessive weights in the gym to increase his bicep size because he had heard the news that Nike was bringing out new sleeveless tops.
  5. In January 2017, when he had won the doubles title at the Brisbane International, the first ATP-level doubles title of his career, and as of January 2022, the only such title of his career, he and Jordan Thompson had become the first Australian duo ever to win the Brisbane International.
  6. The biggest win of his career had come in March 2018 when he had upset the defending champion and the then world number 1 ranked Roger Federer in the 2nd round of the Miami Open with the scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Thanasi was ranked 175th in the world going into the tournament and had thus become the lowest-ranked player to beat the then world number 1 ranked player since world number 178 Francisco Clavet’s upset of Thanasi’s mentor Lleyton Hewitt in 2003. In a weird coincidence, Lleyton’s defeat had also come in the 2nd round of the same tournament which was known as the NASDAQ-100 Open at that time.
