Zella Day Facts

  1. Her mornings start with a foot rub followed by taking her dog out for a walk.
  2. Her father used to run a guest ranch when Zella was 6-15 years old which made her comfortable enough around horses to participate in rodeos during her childhood.
  3. Zella’s parents got married in the coal-mining town of Jerome in Arizona. She was named after the wife of one of the town’s founders. Her mother was a huge fan of actor Daniel Day-Lewis, which inspired her middle name.
  4. She started snowboarding at the age of 4 and claims to be very good at it.
  5. Her mother, Ana, insisted that learning the guitar would make Zella a self-sustaining musical artist. She would make an 8 hours round trip from Pinetop to Phoenix to take Zella for her music theory lessons. The singer composes all her songs on the guitar and has stated in an interview that parting with her guitar feels like a removal of a limb.
  6. The singer started performing at the age of 9 at her grandmother’s coffee shop called Mormor café. ‘Mormor’ means ‘grandmother’ in Swedish.
  7. Zella was a skilled soccer player in high school. She was on the roster of the Arizona Olympic Development Program and was hoping to get an athletic scholarship at Northern Arizona University. However, that dream ended when she broke her ankle during an indoor game.
  8. Neil DuCharme, who was Day’s neighbor and a friend of her parents, saw her love for music and provided her with 20,000 dollars so she could self-release her first album at the age of 13. The designers who handled her CD artwork also did it for free.
  9. Powered by Love (2009) helped Zella get J.P. Williams as a manager who set her up for a meeting with Nickelodeon and Disney. However, the young singer refused to work in TV shows because she did not want to have an image like Hannah Montana as a musical artist.
  10. Williams then sent Zella to country music producer Dann Huff in Nashville who organized co-writing sessions for Zella with other renowned artists such as John Paul White and Meghan Trainor for nearly a year. By the time Zella turned 15, Huff wanted to produce a record for Zella. This time, as well, the headstrong singer refused to sign up because she did not want to be a country music artist.
  11. Day finally signed up with Hollywood Records because they gave her complete creative control of her musical creations.
  12. Her album, Kicker, is named after an Apache Cowboy who used to work on her father’s ranch when she was a kid.
  13. She is a close friend of singer /musician Børns and the two were roommates in 2015.
  14. Zella dabs her favorite floral essential oils on her wrist and burns incense onstage before every performance. The scent is important to her because it makes her feel at home even at faraway strange places.
  15. Day is a feminist and has initiated a movement called ‘Headstrong Mama’ on social media to bring positive attention to strong female role models.
  16. She has a pet dog, a miniature golden doodle named Mitzy.
