Aaron Sorkin Facts

  1. Sorkin took an interest in acting at an early age and studied under drama teacher Arthur Storch at Syracuse University.
  2. As a struggling actor, he worked odd jobs to make ends meet, some of which included working as a limousine driver, a bartender at Broadway’s Palace Theater, delivering singing telegrams, distributing fliers for a hunting-and-fishing show, and many more.
  3. He has frequently collaborated with television director Thomas Schlamme to create the ‘walk and talk’ directing sequence where the characters are directed in a single tracking shot, without any cuts, as they engage in extended conversations while moving around the set.
  4. The idea for his play A Few Good Men came to him from his sister Deborah Sorkin who, at the time, was working as a U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. The main plot was inspired by her experience of defending a group of Marines who were being charged with trying to kill a fellow Marine (in a hazing incident) on the orders of a superior officer.
  5. Sorkin was motivated to write an open letter to his teenage daughter Roxy and her mother, Julia Bingham, in 2016 following the election of Donald Trump as President.
  6. His long-standing battle with substance addiction began in 1987 with marijuana and cocaine. Initially, he began abusing cocaine to relieve himself of nervous tensions that he faced regularly. He finally kicked the habit in 2001.
  7. In April 2001, he was arrested at Burbank Airport for being in the possession of illicit drugs like hallucinogenic mushrooms, crack cocaine, and marijuana. He subsequently entered a drug diversion program in June 2001.
  8. His writing process is very energetic wherein he reads his lines aloud and enacts every character. He once got so involved while writing a fight sequence that he accidentally lunged towards the mirror and broke his nose.
  9. In November 2022, Aaron suffered a stroke during the writing process for his first Broadway musical adaptation, Camelot. He later revealed that the reason for the stroke was high blood pressure.
  10. He is not active on social media.
