Akash Madhwal Facts
- Although Akash took to competitive cricket as late as 2018 (when he was already about 24 years old), his rise was swift. He made his senior-level T20 debut for his home state of Uttarakhand in November 2019, his first-class debut in December 2019, and his List A debut in February 2021.
- When he made his IPL debut, for the Mumbai Indians, in early May 2023, Akash became the first Uttarakhand-based homegrown cricketer ever to have played an IPL match.
- He came into his own at the fag end of the league stage of the 2023 season of the IPL – recording team-best bowling figures (3/31 in 4 overs) in a 27-run victory in the Mumbai Indians‘ 12th match of the league stage as well as match-best bowling figures (4/37 in 4 overs) in an 8-wicket win in the team’s 14th (and last) match of the league stage. These 2 wins were vital in helping the Mumbai Indians finish in 4th place in the league stage and clinch the last place available in the playoff stage of the competition.
- Akash continued his dream run by recording a 5-wicket haul (his first in the T20 format) in the eliminator match (the 2nd match of the IPL‘s playoff stage that is contested between the teams that finished in the 3rd and 4th positions in the league stage) of that season. He conceded a meager 5 runs in this game which meant that he had set the record for the best bowling figures by an uncapped player (a player who has not played a senior-level international match for his/her country) in IPL history.
- The performance also won him the ‘Player of the Match’ award. His bowling figures (5/5 in 3.3 overs) were also the then-best in a playoff match in the IPL history – surpassing a 13-year-old record held by Australia’s Doug Bollinger (4/13). This made him the first bowler to have registered a 5-wicket haul in an IPL playoff match.
- Akash is a close friend of Indian international cricketer Rishabh Pant as they both used to live in the same area in the northern Indian hill state of Uttarakhand.
