Andre De Grasse Facts

  1. He spent his childhood years growing up in Markham, Ontario.
  2. In May 2015, he competed for USC and won the Pac-12 championship with a legal 100 m time of 9.97. It marked the first time he ran under 10 seconds and he also became the first Canadian to do so since Bruny Surin.
  3. At the NCAA Championships in 2015, Andre De Grasse won both the 100 and 200 meters ahead of favorite Trayvon Bromell of Baylor University with wind-aided times of 9.75 and 19.58, respectively. Following the event, his friends encouraged him to keep following his passion and he stated, “So I ask myself…world champion? Olympic champion? Why not me? I’ve come this far, and I’ve only scratched the surface. I want to keep it going. Track is fun to me, and as long as it stays this way, I expect to keep getting better.”
  4. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Andre De Grasse won the bronze medal in the final in 9.91 seconds, behind Usain Bolt and his main rival Justin Gatlin. Becoming the first male athlete to win a medal for Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics, his performance got many to suggest him as Bolt’s heir apparent and even Usain Bolt himself supported the claims, stating, “He came through again. He’s going to be good; he runs just like me, I mean, he’s really slow at the blocks, but when he gets going, he gets going.”
  5. He founded the Andre De Grasse Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament (a charity event that supports the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation) in 2016.
  6. Andre De Grasse won the 2016 Lionel Conacher Award as the Canadian Press male athlete of the year and was presented with the Rising Star Award by the IAAF.
  7. He received the Harry Jerome Award in April 2017.
  8. On July 20, 2017, he joined YouTube with his self-titled channel.
