Delino DeShields Facts
- Delino made his MLB debut for the Montreal Expos in April 1990. He recorded 4 hits, the most by a debutant in any of the previous 29 seasons of the National League (the older of the two conferences that constitute the MLB – the other being the American League).
- His performances were so good that he became the regular second baseman for the Montreal Expos in 1990. Delino also finished in 2nd place in the race for the ‘National League Rookie of the Year’ award.
- He then went on to record his 2 best years in the MLB in 1992 and 1993 – posting a batting average of .294 and averaging 45 stolen bases. Although his form petered thereafter, he continued to play in the MLB for almost a decade – his last MLB appearance was in August 2002, for the Chicago Cubs.
- Delino served as the manager of the Dayton Dragons (a MiLB (Minor League Baseball, a league that operates at a rung below MLB (Major League Baseball)Â team) for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The Dayton Dragons are the ‘High-A’ (the 3rd-highest level of play in MiLB) affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, a professional team that competes in MLB.
- In December 2012, he was made the manager of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos – the Cincinnati Reds‘ then ‘Double-A’ (the 2nd-highest level of play in MiLB) affiliate – for the 2013 season. In December 2014, Delino became the manager of the Louisville Bats – the ‘Triple-A’ (the highest level of play in MiLB) affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
- He continued to rise through the Cincinnati Reds‘ hierarchical structure over the next few years and even spent the 2022 season as their first base and baserunning coach. However, he was fired in October 2022, following a disastrous season that saw the team lose 100 games.
- In 2023, Delino became the manager of the Harrisburg Senators, the ‘Double-A’ (the second-highest level of play in MiLB) affiliate of the Washington Nationals, a professional team that competes in MLB.
