Derrick Henry Facts
- Derrick’s parents were both in their mid-teens when he was born. His grandmother Gladys had nicknamed him ‘Shocka’ due to the unexpected nature of his birth.
- He had spent very little time with his father in his childhood as he had been arrested several times for a slew of crimes including drug and prostitution-related offenses. He was thus primarily raised by his grandmother.
- Derrick had made a promise to his grandmother that he would complete his college degree despite his playing commitments and he worked hard to fulfill his promise even after she died in 2016. After his graduation in May 2018, he had written an article that was published in The Players’ Tribune, thanking his late grandmother.
- While he was at Yulee High School, he had set the national high school football record for ‘Most Career Rushing Yards’. His number 2 jersey was eventually retired by the Yulee Hornets.
- During his junior season (2015) at The University of Alabama, playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide, he had broken Herschel Walker’s single-season record for ‘Rushing Yards’ in the SEC (Southeastern Conference).
- The same year, he was honored with several prestigious awards including the ‘Heisman Trophy’ (awarded annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) football), the ‘Doak Walker Award’ (presented annually to the best running back in college football in the United States), the ‘Maxwell Award’ (best college football player in the United States), and the ‘Walter Camp Award’ (collegiate American football player of the year).
