He was an integral member of the Indian squads that had won the 2007 ICC World T20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, the first and second time, respectively, that India had achieved those feats. He had played a vital role in the final matches of both those tournaments, scoring 75 runs from 54 balls (nearly half of the team’s total of 157 runs) and 97 runs from 122 balls (35% of the team’s total of 277 runs), respectively, in those 2 matches. In the Indian domestic circuit, he had played for his home state of Delhi (1999–2018) across all 3 formats. One of the finest top-order batters of his era, he had represented franchise teams like the Delhi Daredevils (2008–2010, 2018) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (2011–2017) in the IPL (Indian Premier League). He had captained the latter team to their first 2 and, as of October 2021, their only 2 IPL titles – in 2012 and 2014. He had retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018. In 2019, he had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, one of the two major political parties in India. In May 2019, he had won the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India’s bicameral Parliament) election to become a ‘Member of Parliament’ from the constituency of East Delhi.

Gautam Gambhir Facts

  1. He had been adopted by his grandparents 18 days after his birth and had spent most of his childhood with them. He had started playing cricket when he was 10 years old.
  2. Throughout most of the 1990s, he used to stay at his maternal uncle Pawan Gulati’s house. Pawan would regularly advise him about cricketing matters and had helped him get enrolled in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy in Delhi. In 2000, Gautam was selected for the first intake of the National Cricket Academy, the prime cricket training facility for budding cricketers in India, located in Bengaluru.
  3. In 2008, he was honored with the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award’, the 2nd-highest sporting honor of India.
  4. Between March 2009 and January 2010, he had scored hundreds in 5 successive test matches. He was the first Indian and just the 4th cricketer overall to have achieved this feat. The other cricketers to have done so before he were Don Bradman (January 1937-July 1938), Jacques Kallis (December 2003-March 2004), and Mohammad Yousuf (August 2006-November 2006). As of October 2021, no other cricketer had achieved this rare streak.
  5. In 2009, he also became the number one ranked batsman in the ICC (International Cricket Council) Test Rankings. The same year, he won the ‘ICC Test Player of the Year’ award, becoming the second Indian to win the award after Rahul Dravid had won in 2004, the inaugural year of the ICC Awards.
  6. He also holds the record of being the first Indian batsman to have scored more than 300 runs in 4 consecutive bilateral Test match series.
  7. Between late 2010 and late 2011, he had captained the Indian national team in 6 ODI matches, in a stand-in capacity. India had won all 6 games.
  8. In 2019, for his services to cricket, he was honored with the Padma Shri, the 4th highest civilian award in India.
