  1. He grew up in Newcastle-under-Lyme but also lived briefly in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was a child.
  2. At age 13, he accidentally stumbled into acting while serving a punishment for misbehavior at the school theater.
  3. While at the Winchester College, he took part in the production of Twelfth Night and performed in Winchester and the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.
  4. At St Peter’s College, Oxford, he was taught English by poet and playwright Francis Warner.
  5. For his role as medic Kurt “Doc” Schmid in the film Black Hawk Down (2001), he took lessons from Ranger medics in combat scenarios.
