Jensen Huang is an American business magnate who is best known as the co-founder of Nvidia Corporation, an American multinational technology company that designs graphics processing units (GPUs – specialized electronic circuits designed to manipulate memory to accelerate the creation of images intended for output to a display device) and application programming interfaces (APIs – a type of software interface that helps 2 or more computer programs to communicate with each other) for data science and high-performance computing. It also develops system-on-a-chip units (SoCs – circuits that integrate most or all components of a computer or another electronic system) for the mobile computing and automotive market and is a major supplier of AI (artificial intelligence) hardware and software. Jensen owns about 3.6% of Nvidia Corporation and has served as the company’s CEO and president since its inception in 1993. The company’s invention (in 1999) of the GPU has revolutionized modern computer graphics, parallel computing, and modern AI – the last of those ushering in a new era of computing, with the GPU acting as the brain of computers, robots, and self-driving cars that can perceive and understand the world. In September 2021, Jensen was included in the ‘Time 100’, an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world – published by Time, an American news magazine based in New York City.

Jensen Huang Facts
- Jensen’s family had emigrated to the United States when he was about 9 years old, initially living in Oneida – an unincorporated community in Clay County, Kentucky. The family later settled down in the state of Oregon.
- During the mid and late 1980s, he worked at LSI Logic Corporation (an American company that was a pioneer in the ASIC (Application-specific Integrated Circuit – a chip customized for a particular use) and ECAD (Electronic Computer-aided Design – a category of software tools for designing integrated circuits and printed circuit boards) industries but later evolved to design and sell semiconductors and software). Jensen had risen to the position of director there.
- During the same period, he also briefly worked as a microprocessor designer at Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., an American multinational semiconductor company that develops computer processors and related technologies for business and consumer markets.
- In 1999, about 6 years after establishing Nvidia Corporation (in 1993), Jensen was named the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year in High Technology’ by Ernst & Young Global Limited, a British multinational professional services partnership firm.
- In the mid-2000s, he donated USD 30 million to Stanford University, his alma mater, to build an engineering center. In June 2009, during a commencement ceremony at Oregon State University, his other alma mater, he was awarded an honorary doctorate.
- In 2007, Jensen was honored with the ‘Pioneer Business Leader Award’ by the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (a non-profit organization headquartered in San Jose, California, that creates resources and programs for students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields) for his contribution to technology as well as philanthropy.
- In 2017, he was named the ‘Businessperson of the Year’ by Fortune, an American multinational business magazine headquartered in New York City.
- In October 2019, Harvard Business Review (a renowned general management magazine) ranked Jensen at number 1 in its list of the world’s 100 best-performing CEOs over the lifetime of their tenure.
- In November 2020, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the National Taiwan University, a public research university in Taipei, Taiwan.
- In August 2021, the Semiconductor Industry Association (a trade association and lobbying group that represents the American semiconductor industry) awarded Jensen their highest honor – the ‘Robert N. Noyce’ Award – named after renowned American physicist and entrepreneur Robert Norton Noyce who co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor International, Inc. (a now-defunct semiconductor company that was a pioneer in the manufacturing of transistors and integrated circuits) in 1957 and Intel Corporation (a multinational technology company that is among the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturers) in 1968.
- In 2022, Jensen donated USD 50 million to Oregon State University – as a portion of a planned USD 200 million donation towards the creation of a supercomputing institute there.
- In late May 2023, Nvidia Corporation became the world’s first chipmaker and only the 9th company in the world to breach the milestone of USD 1 trillion in market capitalization (the total value of a publicly traded company’s outstanding common shares owned by stockholders). The feat earned Jensen the tag of ‘One-Trillion Man’.
