1. She was born in Vlaardingen and was brought up in Den Haag.
2. Karen grew up with a playful lifestyle, participating in plenty of sports such as swimming, singing, and sailing.
3. In 1985, Karen was discovered through a competition organized by Elite called the “Look of the Year”, after a friend of hers had secretly sent her pictures to the agency. Karen won 1st place in Amsterdam and was later placed at the 2nd position during the finals.
4. In 1992, Karen signed with Victoria’s Secret and made a total of 5 appearances for the brand from 1996 to 2000.
5. In 2001, Karen opened up about being raped by top executives at Elite as well as by Prince Albert of Monaco in an interview conducted on the French show Tout le monde en parle. However, the footage from the interview was erased.
6. According to her father, Karen had been a victim of drug abuse in the past.
7. In 2001, Karen was admitted to a psychiatric hospital named Villa Montsouris where she spent 5 months under careful observation.
8. In 2002, Karen tried to take her life by consuming a high dose of sleeping pills at her Paris apartment on Avenue Montaigne. However, this led her into a state of coma and she was rushed to hospital by her neighbors and ex-fiance, Jean-Yves Le Fur, who had come to the apartment to check on Karen after she hadn’t answered a number of his calls.
