Kerri Strug is an American former gymnast who is best known for being an integral member of the Magnificent Seven, the United States’ all-around women’s gymnastics team that had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. She was just 18 years old at that time and had become a national hero after she had managed to successfully land on her second vault, despite having suffered an ankle injury earlier in the day, to secure the medal for her team. She had subsequently collapsed in pain and was carried to the podium by her coach, Béla Károlyi. 4 years earlier, she was a member of the American team that had won the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, in the team event, she had won the ‘Silver’ medal in 1991 (Indianapolis) and 1994 (Dortmund); and the ‘Bronze’ medal in 1995 (Sabae, Japan).

Kerri had graduated, in 1995, from the Green Fields Country Day School, a free public charter school in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. After her retirement from professional gymnastics, she had joined the University of California, Los Angeles, a public land-grant research university where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

She had later taken a transfer to Stanford University, a private research university in California where she had earned a master’s degree in sociology.

In the autumn season of 2000, she had also taken part in Semester at Sea, a study-abroad program that was founded in 1963 and has been managed by the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) in Fort Collins, Colorado.
