Lal Krishna Advani is an Indian politician who is one of the co-founders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He served as the Minister of Home Affairs from 1998 to 2004, becoming the longest-serving Minister of Home Affairs. From 2002 to 2004, he served as the 7th Deputy Prime Minister of India. The prime ministerial candidate of the BJP during the 2009 general election, Advani has also been the longest-serving Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Lal Krishna Advani was honored with the Padma Vibhushan (India’s second highest civilian honor) in 2015 and was awarded Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian honor) in 2024.

  1. Following the partition of India, his family migrated to India and subsequently settled in Bombay.
  2. He was 14 years old when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a far-right Hindu nationalist volunteer paramilitary organization, in 1941. Lal Krishna Advani eventually became a pracharak (full-time worker) conducting shakhas and then became the secretary of the Karachi unit in 1947.
  3. After India’s partition, he served as a pracharak in Rajasthan and worked across Alwar, Bharatpur, Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar districts until 1952.
  4. He was a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) (a political party founded in 1951) and served as the leader of the party in the Delhi Metropolitan Council (DMC) from 1966 to 1967.
  5. Lal Krishna Advani was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Delhi for a six-year tenure in 1970.
  6. He became the president of BJS at the Kanpur session of the party working committee meeting in 1973.
  7. In 1976, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat for the second time.
  8. Along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani co-founded a political party named the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980.
  9. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the third time, representing the BJP, from Madhya Pradesh in 1982.
  10. It was under Lal Krishna Advani’s leadership that the BJP became the political face of the Ayodhya dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi site as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) began a movement for the construction of a temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Rama at the site of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. It was claimed that the site was the birthplace of Lord Ram and that a temple once stood there which was demolished by the Mughal emperor Babur, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) supporting the claim.
  11. He was announced as BLP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2009 general elections.
  12. In 2010, Lal Krishna Advani was appointed as the working chairperson of the National Democratic Alliance.
  13. He successfully contested the 2014 general election from Gandhinagar.
