Lane Johnson studied at Groveton High School, a public high school located in the city of Groveton, Texas. During his time there, he played football as well as competed in track. As a football player, he was an honorable mention All-state selection as a quarterback and was named All-district. Moreover, he competed in the throwing events in track & field and was ranked 4th in the shot put event at the 2008 UIL 1A State Championships, with a top throw of 15.21 meters (49 ft 7 in).
He then enrolled at Kilgore College (KC), a public community college located in Kilgore, Texas. He went on to play quarterback and tight end for the Kilgore Rangers football team for the 2008 season. He stayed at the college for only one year in which he amassed 584 passing yards for 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions with a 52.4% completion rate while at quarterback.
After that, Lane Johnson transferred to the University of Oklahoma and played for the Oklahoma Sooners football team from 2009 to 2012.
