Lisa Su is an American business executive who is best known for turning around the fortunes of AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), an American multinational semiconductor company that develops computer processors and related technologies for business and consumer markets. She joined the company in 2012 and was appointed its president and CEO 2 years later. Since she became AMD‘s CEO in October 2014, the company’s stock soared more than 25-fold, propelling it to a USD 110 billion market capitalization by early July 2021. She was appointed the company’s chairperson in 2022. Before joining AMD in 2012, she had held engineering and management positions in Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (1994-1995), International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) (1995-2007), and Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (2007-2011). She is well recognized for her work in the development of silicon-on-insulator semiconductor manufacturing technologies and more efficient semiconductor chips during her stint as the vice-president of IBM‘s semiconductor R&D center. She has served as a member on the boards of Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), Cisco Systems, Inc., the Global Semiconductor Alliance, and the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association. She is also a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and in 2021, became the first woman to receive the ‘IEEE Robert Noyce Medal’, a science award presented by the IEEE for outstanding contributions to the microelectronics industry.

Lisa had graduated in 1986, from the Bronx High School of Science, a magnet school (American public school with specialized courses) in New York City. She joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a private land-grant research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the fall of 1986. By 1991, she had earned a bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree in electrical engineering.

From 1990 to 1994, she studied for her Ph.D. degree at the same institution. She was one of the first researchers to look into silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, a then unproven technique for increasing transistors’ efficiency by building them atop layers of insulating material. She graduated in 1994 and her thesis was titled ‘Extreme-submicrometer silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOSFETs’.
