- He was in his mid-20s when he began his career as a semi-professional footballer. Although considered a relatively old age for a professional debut, he went on to play for many Serie C teams like Entella, Spezia, Viareggio, and Empoli.
- Luciano Spalletti retired as a football player in 1993 after being involved in lower-tier football in Italy for around a decade. He remained at Empoli as a coach and served as head coach between July 1993 and June 1998.
- From July 1998 to June 1999, he coached Sampdoria. He then coached Venezia from July to October 1999.
- In March 2001, Luciano Spalletti started his stint at Udinese and guided the club to a remarkable 4th-placed finish in Serie A during the 2004–05 season.
- His success at Udinese attracted attention from Roma and he became the club’s coach in June 2005. He helped the club reach the 2006 Coppa Italia Final.
- Luciano Spalletti was elected Serie A Coach of the Year in 2006.
