Obie Trice Facts

  1. He began rapping and rhyming at the age of 11 after he was gifted a karaoke machine by his mother.
  2. By the time he turned 14, Obie was already participating in rap battles in Detroit’s underground hip hop scene. He would often attend a gathering called Hip Hop Shop with his friends on weekends.
  3. Appreciation and positive feedback from the spectators at the rap battles encouraged Obie to seriously pursue a career in music. Before releasing his first album, he had already released 15 songs.
  4. Trice was introduced by the host of the Hip Hop Shop by his original name Obie Trice and he decided to stick with it for the future, instead of choosing a different stage name, which is the usual practice.
  5. Obie was introduced to the iconic rapper Eminem by Detroit-based rapper, Bizarre. The two were then set up for a dinner by his manager. This began a long-running professional relationship between Obie and Eminem.
  6. In 2002, Obie contributed raps for the soundtrack of Eminem’s popular movie 8 Mile and also made a cameo appearance in the film as a rapper standing in a parking lot. Eminem reciprocated by contributing as a producer for Obie’s debut album titled Cheers (2003). The album went on to receive ‘Platinum’ certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
  7. He featured on the single Hennessey from Tupac Shakur‘s posthumous album Loyal To The Game (2004).
  8. He left the label Shady Records in June 2008 and launched his independent music label named Black Market Entertainment in April 2010.
  9. On December 31, 2005, his car was attacked by unknown thugs and was shot 6 times. He was driving on the Lodge Expressway by Wyoming Avenue in Detroit, after attending a New Year’s eve party. He was, somehow, able to drive the car away and his then-girlfriend contacted the police.
  10. Obie was taken to the hospital and operated upon. However, one of the bullets that hit him in the head was not removed by the doctors as the procedure was deemed too risky. That bullet, reportedly, is lodged in Obie’s skull.
  11. In December 2019, Obie Trice was arrested for shooting his girlfriend’s son. In July 2020, it was revealed that he had been sentenced to 90 days in the Oakland County Jail in Michigan.
  12. In June 2022, Obie was arrested and jailed on a charge of using a telephone to harass or threaten someone. He later posted the $10,000 bond in the case.
