- When Princess Nokia was 10 years old, her mother had passed away due to complications arising out of her affliction with AIDS. A year before this, as her mother was hospitalized, and until the age of 16, she was in foster care. Her foster mother, however, was physically abusive due to which she later went to live with her grandmother. She had started writing rhymes as a means to divert her attention and reduce the trauma of her mother’s death.
- When she had publicly announced that she was bisexual, she had mentioned that growing up around the queer community of New York City was a key turning point in her life. She had also started her career by performing at gay clubs which was where she had first gained popularity. She identifies as a gender non-conforming person and uses they/them as well as she/her pronouns.
- In 2017, she had punched a man at a concert at the Cambridge University, claiming that he was hurling ‘dirty obscenities’ at her. She had later made a highly controversial statement where she had told the crowd – ‘that’s what you do when a white boy disrespects you’.
- Later that year, a video had made the rounds on social media showing a woman throwing hot soup in a man’s face who was allegedly hurling racial slurs at a group of teenagers during a subway journey to Brooklyn. It was later revealed that the woman in the video was Princess Nokia after which she had claimed responsibility for the incident. She had also justified herself by stating that everyone on the train had supported her.
- She is a staunch supporter of intersectional feminism and has co-founded the Smart Girl Club, a podcast that discusses healthy living and urban feminism.
