Sushil Kumar is an Indian wrestler who won a 2008 Olympic medal and became the 2nd Indian wrestler to achieve the feat after Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who won a bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics.   1. He was 14 years old when he began training in pehlwani (a form of wrestling contested in the Indian subcontinent) at the Chhatrasal Stadium’s akhada. At the akhada, Sushil Kumar was trained by Yashvir and Ramphal.
  2. It was his father and his cousin Sandeep who inspired him to pursue wrestling.
  3. Sushil Kumar later received training from Arjuna awardee Satpal Singh and was then trained by Gyan Singh and Rajkumar Baisla Gurjar at the Indian Railways camp.
  4. He received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest honor for sportspersons, in July 2009.
  5. He served as an assistant commercial manager with the Indian Railways.
  6. Sushil Kumar once refused the offer of ₹5 million (US$70,000) to appear in a surrogate ad for a leading liquor brand. He stated, “I didn’t want to be associated with a liquor brand in any form as it would send a wrong signal to the youth. The sporting tradition that I have been raised in values discipline way above money.”
