Tilak Varma Facts

  1. In India’s first match at the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, against Sri Lanka, Tilak had scored 46 runs to help India reach a total of 297 runs which was good enough to record a 90-run victory.
  2. He was not required to bat in the next (and last) 2 of India’s group stage matches. Against Japan, India had overhauled a paltry target of 42 runs inside just 5 overs without losing a wicket. Against New Zealand, India’s openers had put together an unbroken stand of 115 runs in 23 overs after which rain had intervened and India’s innings had to be declared closed. India eventually defeated New Zealand by 44 runs to top the group with 3 wins in 3 games.
  3. He was dismissed for just 2 runs in the quarter-final against Australia as India stumbled to a middling total of 233 runs. India’s bowlers then stepped up to deliver a hefty 74-run victory. He was not required to bat in the semi-final, against arch-rivals Pakistan, as India’s openers feasted on their opponents’ bowling to hunt down a target of 173 runs without losing a wicket.
  4. In the final, he had scored 38 runs which was the team’s 2nd-highest individual score. India’s batting, their strength throughout the tournament, had betrayed them in the final as the team was bundled out for just 177 runs. In a tense, attritional, and often confrontational run chase, Bangladesh’s batsmen had held their nerves well to edge the contest by 3 wickets and clinch their first ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup title.
  5. At the 2022 IPL (Indian Premier League) mega auction, he had been acquired by the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.7 crores (USD 226k), an amount that was 8.5 times more than his base price of INR 20 lakhs.
  6. In just his 2nd game for the franchise, against the Rajasthan Royals, he had impressed fans, commentators, and cricket analysts by smashing 61 runs off just 33 balls laced with 3 fours and 5 sixes. Although the Mumbai Indians lost the match by 23 runs, his performance was widely applauded with many experts expressing hope that he would be leading the franchise’s middle-order batting in the future.
  7. In 2022, he made the record for scoring the most runs by a teenager in a single IPL season by scoring over 368 runs in 12 innings (the figures may change as the IPL 2022 season was still running) while playing for Mumbai Indians (MI). Before him, the record was held by Rishabh Pant who had scored 366 runs in 14 innings in IPL 2017.
  8. After IPL 2022 finished, he handed over all the money, he received from IPL to his father as he was not ready to get distracted in life.
  9. In August 2023, Tilak broke the record for scoring the most sixes for India in men’s T20I cricket aged 20 or less after he had slammed 7 sixes for India in T20I cricket.
