Tony McCarthy is an Irish former professional soccer player who represented, as a defender, the University College Dublin A.F.C. (1987-1990) and Shelbourne F.C. (1991-1992, 1997-2004) in the Republic of Ireland; Derry City F.C. (1990-1991) in Northern Ireland; and Millwall F.C. (1992-1995) and Colchester United F.C. (1995-1997) in England. Although based in Northern Ireland, Derry City F.C. has competed in the Republic of Ireland’s league system since the early 1970s. Tony also spent a brief loan spell with the English club Crewe Alexandra F.C. in 1994. At the international level, he briefly represented the Republic of Ireland at the under-21 tier – making 5 appearances between 1990 and 1991. He announced his retirement from professional soccer in January 2005. He was appointed to this position in November 2012. Tony, as of July 2023, was working as a physiotherapist with Shamrock Rovers F.C., the most successful professional soccer club in the Republic of Ireland.

- With Shelbourne F.C., Tony won the League of Ireland (the top division of the Republic of Ireland’s professional soccer league system) title 5 times (1991-92, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003, and 2004). The title triumph in 2004 was the club’s 12th such and had made it the then 2nd most successful team in the competition’s history.
- For his performances in the 1991-92 season, he was named the ‘PFAI (Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland Players) Young Player of the Year’. The award, since 1982, has been presented to the League of Ireland‘s best player of the previous season who is under 23 years of age. The shortlist for the award is compiled by the members of the PFAI (the representative body for professional and semi-professional soccer players plying their trade in the Republic of Ireland) and then the winner is voted for by the other players in the league.
- With Shelbourne F.C., Tony also won the FAI Cup (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in the Republic of Ireland) in 2000. It was the club’s 7th such and had made it the then 3rd most successful team in the competition’s history.
