- His father was a former rodeo hand while his mother was a young rider in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association.
- At the age of 18, he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and later became the youngest PRCA World All-Around Cowboy, as per the Guinness Book of Records.
- He acquired the World All-Around Champion title 7 times from 1989 to 1994 and 1998.
- In 1994, he surpassed Larry Mahan’s and Ferguson’s record of 6 titles and tied with Ferguson’s record of 6 titles consecutively. It was this time that Murray was being dubbed as the “King of the Cowboys”.
- He was inducted into the PRCA’s ProRodeo Hall of Fame at a very young age.
