- He started his career as a commercial model.
- Vinay Rai played rugby for the Bangalore Rugby Football Club (B.R.F.C) and was part of the Indian squad that toured Bahrain in 2001.
- In 2007, he made his acting debut by co-starring as Karthik (a fun-loving civil engineer) in the Tamil-language romantic musical film Unnale Unnale. This role got him nominated for a Vijay Award in the “Best Debut Actor” category.
- He made his Telugu-language film debut as Abhiram (the only son of Uma and Babji) in the 2008 romantic drama film Vaana, a remake of the 2006 Kannada-language film Mungaru Male.
