Amlan Borgohain Facts

  1. Amlan, during his school days, was quite interested in soccer. He used to watch his father and brother play the sport and he too developed a passion for it. Amlan even made it to the junior national team but frequent injuries kept obstructing his progress.
  2. His mother then read the riot act and asked him to either choose a different sport or quit playing games/sports completely. Although a friend of his brother, looking at Amlan’s build, had suggested that he should try athletics, he was not really interested in the idea at that time.
  3. He, however, changed his mind later and took to the track, participating in his first race in 2015. He would later state in an interview, perhaps jokingly, that the reason he chose sprinting was that he was a lazy spirit and wanted to compete in an event that would get over rather quickly.
  4. His breakthrough came when he won the ‘Gold’ medal at the Hyderabad Juniors Inter-District Championship in the 100 m event. Consequently, he qualified for multiple state-level competitions. He went on to become the national champion twice in that event.
  5. He also won the ‘Gold’ medal (with a time of 20.75 seconds) at the National Open Championships in his first 200 m final at a senior level. He bettered this performance in April 2022 when he clocked 20.52 seconds in the 200 m event at the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships. This performance beat the previous national record of 20.63 seconds set by Olympian Muhammed Anas Yahiya in 2018.
  6. With soccer being his first love, he continues to own a jersey of the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo. He is also a huge fan of Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian national soccer team.
  7. He enjoys watching Dragon Ball Z, the iconic Japanese anime TV series. He is a big fan of Goku, the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries. He stated in an interview that he was motivated by the fact that Goku continues to improve himself when he fights until he finally achieves ‘Ultra’ (ultimate power). Amlan felt that he too needed to inculcate this attitude if he wished to achieve his dreams.
