  1. In March 2010, the Forbes magazine declared Carlos Slim as the richest man in the world with Bill Gates on the second and investor Warren Buffet on third spot. This was the first instance in history that a Mexican national had topped such a list.
  2. He regularly used to receive business lessons from his father before he passed away when Carlos was 13 years old. His father used to teach him management, accounting, and finance.
  3. He made his first investment at the age of 11 when he bought some government savings bond, which helped him learn the concept of the compound interest.
  4. He made his first stock investment at the age of 12 as he bought some stocks of a Mexican bank. By the age of 15, he had acquired the stocks of Mexico’s largest bank.
  5. He later started working in his father’s company and by the age of 17, he was paid 200 pesos a week for his work.
  6. When he was studying at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, he also used to teach linear programming and algebra.
  7. After completion of his college education, he started working as a stock trader. Carlos used to put in 14-hour work shifts.
  8. In 1965, Carlos used profits from his private investments, which amounted to $400,000, to start his stock brokerage firm, Inversora Bursátil.
  9. In 1965, he made his first acquisition “Jarritos del Sur”. In 1966, he established Inmobiliaria Carso.
  10. Carlos Slim is well aware of the modern technology but doesn’t even have a computer in his office. He prefers to record financial data in the well-maintained notebooks.
  11. In the Mexican economy downturn of the mid-80s, he acquired majority stakes in the mining and chemicals company, Empresas Frisco for $50 million.
  12. In the mid-eighties, he also became the main stakeholder in Sanborn Hermanos food retailer (gift shop and restaurant chain), Bimex hotels, and Compania Hulera Euzkadi (Mexico’s largest tiremaker).
  13. When the Mexican government decided to privatize the telecom industry in the early 90s, he acquired Telmex which eventually became the only player in the Mexican telecom industry.
  14. By 2003, he had managed to acquire huge stakes in the leading US retailers such as CompUSA, OfficeMax, Barnes & Nobles, and Circuit City.
  15. In 2008, he managed to acquire 6.4% stake in New York Times Company for $27 million. By January 2015, he had become the largest stakeholder in the company with ownership of 16.8% of the company’s Class A shares.
  16. In September 2012, he managed to buy 30% stake in the Mexican soccer clubs, León and Pachuca through America Movil, his telecommunications company.
  17. In April 2014, he acquired controlling stake in Telekom Austria, which is Austria’s biggest phone carrier that operates in other European countries such as Belarus, Croatia, and Bulgaria.
  18. In May 2014, he opened Inbursa Aquarium, the largest aquarium in Latin America, in Mexico City.
  19. In April 2015, he bought PepsiCo Americas Beverages headquarters in New York. He also purchased the Marquette Building in Detroit.
  20. Although he hasn’t been a fan of The Giving Pledge, which counts Bill Gates and Warren Buffett amongst its supporters, he is a big supporter of philanthropy and has donated billions to various charitable and philanthropic causes.
  21. He has established three non-profit organizations – one for the restoration of downtown, one for sports, and the last one dedicated towards education, arts, and healthcare.
