Jodie Anna Burrage Facts
- Jodie began playing tennis when she was about 5 years old. She was inspired to take up the sport by her mother who used to play it recreationally.
- She first came into the spotlight in June 2022 when she stunned top seed and then world number 4 Paula Badosa in straight sets in the 2nd round of the Eastbourne International (a WTA 500 (the 4th-highest tier of tournaments on the WTA Tour) event). Ranked 169th in the world at that time, it was Jodie’s first win against a player ranked in the ‘Top 5’ of the official WTA singles rankings.
- As of mid-September 2023, this remained her only win against a player ranked in the ‘Top 5’ or even ‘Top 10’ of the official WTA singles rankings. She lost in straight sets to 15th seed and eventual semifinalist Beatriz Haddad Maia in the next (3rd) round of the 2022 Eastbourne International.
- In June 2023, in the 2nd round of the Nottingham Open (a WTA 250 (the lowest tier of tournaments on the WTA Tour) event), Jodie shocked 3rd seed Magda Linette in straight sets to reach the quarter-final stage of a tournament on the WTA Tour for the first time in her career.
- She eventually reached the final of the tournament, her first such appearance on the WTA Tour. It was an all-British encounter where Katie Boulter defeated her in straight sets to lift her first title on the WTA Tour (a worldwide top-tier tennis tour for women organized by the WTA).
