Masta Ace Facts
- While he was studying at the University of Rhode Island, Masta Ace had met DJ, record producer, and rapper Marley Marl during his summer break in 1987. About a year later, he had made his recording debut on the hip hop collective Juice Crew‘s posse-cut titled The Symphony which was released on Marley Marl’s In Control album.
- In 1989, he had released his debut solo single titled ‘Together’ b/w ‘Letter to the Better’. His debut studio album, titled Take a Look Around (1990), was also released through Marley Marl’s Cold Chillin’ label.
- During the years between the release of his debut studio album and his 2nd studio album, he had started to develop bitter feelings toward the commercial state of hip hop music at that time. He had also started to develop some resentment towards the Gangsta rap genre. These feelings had dominated the development and content of his 2nd album titled SlaughtaHouse (1993).
- In 2000, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the most common demyelinating disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This, in turn, disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to transmit signals, resulting in physical, mental, and sometimes psychiatric problems. He had chosen to keep his diagnosis private but it was revealed to the public in 2013 when his medicine syringes and vials were searched through by local police in the Czech Republic, during a routine security check.
