- He was born in the United States but spent his childhood in Canada, and used to live in Mount Albert, Ontario.
- Matthew caught the acting bug from his older brother, Jack, who started acting at the age of 9. Matthew was so enamored by the whole ordeal that Jack was forced to bring him to the set of a Showtime TV drama series Street Time (2002-2003) he starred in.
