  3. While representing Newnham College in the first series of University Challenge, Miriam Margolyes may have been one of the first people to say “f*ck” on British television. She has claimed to have used the word in frustration on the show in 1963.

  5. In 1993, she appeared as Mrs. Mingott in the American historical romantic drama film, The Age of Innocence, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Ryder. For this role, Margolyes won the British Academy Film Award for “Best Supporting Actress”.
  6. Author, actor, and comedian David Walliams has stated that he used Margolyes as a model for the title character in his children’s book Awful Auntie after a rude exchange with her during a stage production. However, he has maintained that he has nothing against her and is a fan of her work.
  7. Some of her critically acclaimed stage performances include playing Madame Morrible in Wicked, Nell in Endgame, Miss Shepherd in The Lady in the Van, and Gertrude Stein in Gertrude Stein and a Companion.
  8. In July 2022, during an interview, Miriam revealed that her least favorite co-star was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who appeared with her in the 1999 film, End of Days.
