- He was born at Middlemore Hospital in Otahuhu, Auckland.
- Whittaker and his brother were enrolled at a Goju-Ryu Karate school, to encourage them both into learning self-discipline and self-defense. Robert trained in the sport for a little over eight years, eventually earning his black belt. When given a choice to either quit the sport or change the sport, Robert decided to take up Hapkido.
