Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher, designated hitter, and outfielder who as of July 2023, had been playing for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball. Previously, Shohei had played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball‘s (NPB) Pacific League. - Ohtani was born in Mizusawa which is now a part of Ōshū to parents who were athletically inclined. His mother was a high school national-level badminton player whereas his father played an amateur baseball player in the Japanese Industrial League.
- Shohei earned the nickname “yakyū shōnen” meaning “a child who lives, eats, and breathes baseball”.
- It was his father who began to coach at an early age and had already developed skills in the sport by elementary school.
- He attended the same school as pitcher Yusei Kikuchi and also admired his work.
- Aside from baseball, Shohei was also a swimmer in high school. He was described by his coach Hiroshi Sasaki to be a fast swimmer.
