Rod Steiger’s Facts
- He had turned down the offer to play Lieutenant General George S. Patton in the biographical war film, Patton (1970). The role was eventually played by George C. Scott, who earned an Academy Award for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance. Steiger later reflected back on his decision to not do the film as his “dumbest career move”.
- He suffered from depression for several years and spoke candidly about his mental health struggles during his lifetime to help eradicate the stigma associated with it.
- He starred in On the Waterfront (1954) and In the Heat of the Night (1967); both films won the ‘Best Picture’ Oscars in their respective years. Furthermore, he also starred in 2 ‘Best Picture’ Oscar-nominated films: The Longest Day (1962) and Doctor Zhivago (1965).
- According to Sidney Poitier, Steiger and Spencer Tracy were the finest actors he ever worked with in his career.
- Robert De Niro‘s portrayal of Al Capone in The Untouchables (1987) was inspired by Steiger’s portrayal of the notorious mobster in Al Capone (1959).

120 kg seems a bit much. He was a bit less than 120 kg. Possibly 115-118 kg. And his hair turned more of a grayish color and he eventually was baldish.
I’d put him at 118 kg
His BMI was about 38-40. His weight was closer to 118 kg (260 pounds). Until he gained some weight.
He was actually 177 cm and 118 kg. His BMI was 32-40. An average BMI of 36. More or less.
