Rouzbeh Cheshmi Facts

  1. Rouzbeh started his youth career in 2005 when, as a 12-year-old, he joined a local club called Paykan F.C. In 2008, he joined Persepolis F.C. Academy, the youth system of Persepolis F.C., a top-flight professional soccer club based in Tehran.
  2. He stayed in that system until 2013 when he started his senior career with the now-defunct Iranian professional club Saba Qom F.C. Before this, between 2011 and 2013, he had spent a loan spell with Moghavemat Tehran F.C., a club that is known for developing youth players.
  3. Moghavemat Tehran F.C. is owned by the Basij, one of the 5 forces of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces that was founded after the Iranian Revolution, in 1979. Rouzbeh was loaned to the club so that he could also complete his mandatory conscription (a state-mandated enlistment of people in a national service, typically a military service) period while representing a club that is affiliated with the Iranian military.
  4. At the 2018 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, Rouzbeh was a part of Iran’s 1-0 win against Morocco in the teams’ opening group stage encounter. This was just Iran’s 2nd win in a FIFA World Cup match – their first win came in June 1998, a 2-1 result against the United States. He suffered an injury during a training session before Iran’s next match, against Spain, and was ruled out of the rest of the competition.
  5. 4 years later, in Iran’s 2nd match of the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he scored Iran’s 1st goal in a 2-0 win over Wales. Rouzbeh’s goal arrived 8 minutes into the stoppage time after the end of the 2nd half of the match. It was the then latest-minute match-winning goal scored in any FIFA World Cup game (excluding goals scored in extra-time) since the 1966 edition of the tournament when exact goal times were first made available. This was just Iran’s 3rd win in a FIFA World Cup match and their first such win against a European team.
  6. The goal against Wales won him the ‘Player of the Match’ award and was just the 2nd goal of his senior-level international career for Iran. His first senior-level international goal for Iran arrived nearly 4-and-a-half years ago, in May 2018 – the only goal of a 1-0 win against Uzbekistan in a friendly match.
