- He spent his childhood years growing up in Corona, California. He was raised in a household with a physically and mentally abusive father.
- Growing up, Sean Strickland experienced anger issues due to the conditions at his home and was kicked out of every school that he attended.
- He was 14 years old when he started training in mixed martial arts.
- When he was 17 years of age, he turned professional.
- In 2008, Sean Strickland made his professional debut for the King of the Cage promotion. He compiled an undefeated record of 9–0 before facing Josh Bryant in a fight for the King of the Cage Middleweight Championship at KOTC: Unification on December 9, 2012. Sean was declared the winner via split decision and then successfully defended his title three times before he was signed by the UFC.
- On March 15, 2014, Sean Strickland made his UFC debut at UFC 171 as he faced Bubba McDaniel and won via rear-naked choke submission in the first round.
- At UFC Fight Night 41, he faced Luke Barnatt on May 31, 2014, and won via split decision.
- On February 22, 2015, he faced Santiago Ponzinibbio in a welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 61 and lost the back-and-forth fight via unanimous decision.
- At UFC Fight Night 71 on July 15, 2015, Sean Strickland faced Igor Araújo and won the fight by unanimous decision.

It was considered a major upset because Adesanya was a 7/1 betting favorite. With this win, he earned his third Performance of the Night bonus award.
- He has revealed that he was a neo-Nazi in his youth as he was inspired by the views of his grandfather. When he was in 9th grade, he was expelled from school for perpetrating a hate crime. After this incident, his mother took him to an MMA gym where he went on to meet people of different races whilst training who helped him and this encouraged him to abandon the neo-Nazi ideology. Sean Strickland has also stated: “If I wasn’t in the UFC, I’d probably be cooking meth in a trailer”.
- A car hit him while he was riding a motorcycle in Los Angeles in December 2018 and he was left unconscious. It was reported that he suffered numerous injuries and needed a knee operation after the accident.
