Alison Doody Facts

  1. Alison’s career kicked off accidentally after she had dropped out of the National College of Art and Design. She was sitting in a café with some friends when she was approached by a still photographer who offered her a modeling job.
  2. She accepted the offer as she needed some pocket money. She had strictly avoided modeling n*de, a clause that she would extend to her acting career. Her modeling contracts led to commercial work which took her around the world.
  3. A casting director later suggested she try out acting and she was sent to London when she was about 19 years old. There, she aced an audition to appear in the upcoming James Bond film titled A View to a Kill (1985). She portrayed the character of Bond girl Jenny Flex in the film and became one of the youngest actresses to have been featured in a James Bond film.
  4. She had turned down the iconic role of Catherine Tramell (eventually played by American actress, producer, and former fashion model Sharon Stone) in the 1992 neo-noir er*tic thriller film Basic Instinct.
  5. In 2000, she had settled a libel action against the Mirror Newspaper Group of Dublin based on the publication of a 1999 article that claimed that she had appeared n*de or partially n*de on screen. She was offered an apology by the media group and an undisclosed amount of money before the court began proceedings which settled the case.
  6. Renowned New Zealand film director Peter Jackson had personally offered Alison the role of Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). She had declined the role due to her impending pregnancy which would have been a major issue with the 18-month on-location production that those movies required. The role eventually went to Australian actress Miranda Otto.
  7. She is an amateur painter and has occasionally designed glassware for Waterford Crystal, an Irish company that is part of her ex-husband Gavin O’Reilly’s business empire.
  8. In November 2018, she was honored with the ‘Almería, Tierra de Cine’ (Almería, Land of Cinema) award. She also received a ‘Star’ on the Almeria Walk of Fame. Almería is a city in southeastern Spain.
