Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player who has represented the Milwaukee Bucks (2013-Present) in the NBA (National Basketball Association). He came into the spotlight in the 2016-17 NBA season during which he became the first player in the history of the league to finish in the ‘Top 20’ in all the 5 major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks). He led the Milwaukee Bucks in all of those categories and was named the NBA‘s ‘Most Improved Player’ in 2017. He has been named in the NBA ‘All-Star Team’ (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), the All-NBA ‘First Team’ (2019), and the NBA ‘All-Defensive First Team’ (2019). He was selected as the NBA‘s ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player) in 2019 and was appointed the captain of the Eastern Conference for 2020. At the international level, he has represented Greece at the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship (5th place), the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup (9th place), the EuroBasket 2015 (Quarter-finalist), and the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup (11th place).

Giannis Antetokounmpo Facts

1. He was born in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian parents who had emigrated from Lagos only 3 years before his birth and had left their firstborn son, Francis, back in Nigeria.
2. Giannis did not receive Greek citizenship until he was 18 as the Greek nationality law abides by the principle of jus sanguinis. He was effectively stateless until then, with no citizenship in either Nigeria or Greece.
3. In Greece, his family’s name was Romanized to Antetokounmpo from the original Adetokunbo which roughly translates to ‘The Crown has returned from Overseas’. His Nigerian name is Ougko.
4. He started playing basketball in 2007, at the age of 13 and joined the youth squad of the Athens-based club Filathlitikos in 2009. He was selected in the club’s senior squad in 2012 and played for them until 2013 when he was picked 15th overall in the first round of the year’s NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.
5. In 2018, he was honored with the Euroscar European ‘Player of the Year Award’, an annual award that is given to the best male basketball player of European citizenship.
