- Two of his films were selected to be included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically’ significant: Amadeus (1984) and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986).
- In 1984, Jones received a Golden Globe award nomination in the ‘Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture’ category for his performance as Emperor Joseph II in Amadeus (1984). Moreover, he and the entire cast of Deadwood received a Screen Actors Guild award nomination for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’ in 2007.
- In 2002, he was arrested for possession of child po**ography and soliciting a 14-year-old boy to produce se**ually explicit images between September 2000 and May 2001. Jones paid the minor to pose n*de on several occasions and in different costumes, including a cowboy hat, in Native American garb, and with stuffed animals. He pleaded not guilty to the possession charge and no contest to the charge of soliciting a minor. He was given 5 five years’ probation, advised mandatory counseling, and registered as a s*x offender. He was arrested twice for not updating his s*x offender status; first in Florida in 2004 and again in California in 2012.
- He and Justin Bieber were pictured together in an Instagram post, shared by Bieber on July 23, 2016, in which the two were seen spoofing Jones’ character Edward R.
