Steven Oleksy studied at L’Anse Creuse High School – North and graduated in 2004.
After that, he got enrolled at Macomb Community College and played one year of NJCAA college baseball. He also attended Lake Superior State University located in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on a scholarship. During his time there, he played three seasons of NCAA Division I college hockey with the Lake Superior State Lakers men’s ice hockey team.

- When he was in high school, he was a four-year letter winner at L’Anse Creuse High School-North. On May 13, 2014, Steven Oleksy’s high school retired his jersey number.
- Growing up, he played hockey around the metro Detroit area and then went on to play for the Troy Sting AA team. He then moved on to play junior hockey in the Central States Hockey League with the Michigan Metro Jets.
- He also played in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) with the Traverse City North Stars.
- Steven Oleksy turned professional after graduating from Lake Superior State University and joined the Las Vegas Wranglers for two games at the end of their 2008–09 ECHL season.
- He was part of Team USA at the 2008 and 2009 IIHF Men’s InLine Hockey World Championships.
- His 2011–12 season started with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL for a third season and he then went on to join the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on loan. He eventually signed an extension with the team for the remainder of the year on February 23, 2012.
- On July 2, 2012, Steven Oleksy signed as a free agent for the following 2012–13 season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears. He played 55 games with the team and ranked third among AHL defensemen in penalty minutes. On March 4, 2013, he was signed to his first NHL deal with the Bears‘ affiliate, the Washington Capitals, on a three-year two-way contract.
- He made his NHL debut on March 5, 2013, with the Washington Capitals and went on to register an assist for his side in a 4–3 comeback victory over the Boston Bruins.
- He left the Washington Capitals as a free agent on July 1, 2015, and then signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. As part of the team, he won the Stanley Cup on June 12, 2016.
- Along with Eric Fehr and a fourth-round pick in 2017, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 1, 2017, in exchange for Frank Corrado.
- Steven Oleksy signed a two-year, one-way contract as a free agent with the Anaheim Ducks on July 2, 2017.
