Guy Ritchie is an English movie director, producer, and screenwriter, widely known for his stylistic British gangster films. He was expelled from an elite boarding school at the age of 15. He immediately attempted to get entry-level jobs in the film industry, got a job as a runner, and eventually directed music promos for bands and some commercials. In 1995, with the profits made from those promos and commercials, he wrote and directed a 20-minute short film, The Hard Case. The short film impressed some producers who bankrolled Guy’s first feature film. It was a crime comedy, a sequel to The Hard Case, named Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). The production was completed in 8 months, received very positive reviews, and became an international success. The movie starred Nick Moran and introduced actors like Jason Statham, Jason Flemyng, and Dexter Fletcher. The popularity of the film prompted him to executive produce a 7-episode spin-off television series called Lock, Stock… in 2000. In 2000, he directed another film on a similar theme, Snatch. It starred the likes of Brad Pitt, Benicio del Toro, Jason Statham, and Vinnie Jones.

Post his marriage to Madonna, he directed her in a controversial music video in 2001. It was for her song What It Feels Like for a Girl and showed her indulging in violent and brutal behavior against men. The same year, he also directed her in a short film called Star for car manufacturer BMW. His next film, Swept Away (2002) also featured Madonna as an arrogant socialite who is trapped on a deserted island. The film was a commercial and critical disaster. In 2005, he returned to his preferred genre of crime-related movies with Revolver. It was not well received by critics. 3 years later, in 2008, he wrote and directed RocknRolla. The movie was a commercial success, which more or less revived his career. It also brought Hollywood attention to British stars like Gerard Butler and Tom Hardy. In 2009, Guy Ritchie rose to global stardom with critical and commercial success Sherlock Holmes that starred Robert Downey Jr. Its 2011 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was an even bigger blockbuster.
