- His father migrated to the United States from Eritrea.
- He had to drop out of high school after he was accused of breaking into the computer lab. Over the years, he had maintained that he was innocent.
- After dropping out of high school, he got involved in petty crimes and for his troubles was put in the juvenile program through the Lennox Sheriff’s Department.
- In his teens, he was a member of the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips gang. However, he decided to leave them after a period of time.
- In 2013, he decided to price his mixtape titled Crenshaw at $100 apiece. He had only put 1,000 copies on sale and managed to sell all of them with Jay-Z buying 100 copies.
- He was forced to go independent due to his clause with Epic Records. After he left them in 2010, they had made it legally mandatory for him to give 5 percent of his earnings to them if he signed with any record label before the end of 2013.
- He had launched his clothing range under the label of ‘The Marathon Clothing’. In June 2017, he opened an exclusive store in his native Los Angeles.
- In August 2014, he was arrested by the Los Angeles authorities after a raid at Slauson Avenue Clothing. He was arrested for obstructing a police officer as he was reported to be interfering with an arrest.

- On March 31, 2019, Nipsey was shot almost 10 times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing at 3:18 p.m. He was later taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Eric Ronald Holder Jr. was later arrested in April 2019. In July 2022, Holder was found guilty of first-degree murder. In February 2023, Holder was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison.
