Sunny Deol is an Indian actor, director, producer, and politician who is best known for his work in several action-thriller films such as Tridev (1989), Ghayal (1990), Jeet (1996), Ghatak (1996), and Gadar (2001). In 1991, he won the ‘Special Jury Award’ at the National Film Awards and the Filmfare ‘Best Actor’ award for the film Ghayal. 3 years later, he repeated the double by winning the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award at the National Film Awards and the Filmfare ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award for the film Damini. In the 2019 Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament) elections, he contested from the Gurdaspur constituency in the state of Punjab and defeated his nearest rival by a margin of more than 80,000 votes.

  1. In 1983, for his very first film Betaab (1982), Sunny received a Filmfare nomination in the category of ‘Best Actor’.
  2. After the success of the 1996 Hindi-language action thriller film Ghatak, renowned director Rajkumar Santoshi had decided to cast Sunny in the lead role in the 2000 action thriller film Pukar. However, one of the co-producers on the film, Boney Kapoor offered Rajkumar a better financial deal to cast his brother and actor Anil Kapoor in the lead role instead. Anil went on to win the National Film Award for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance.
  3. The 2001 Bollywood period film Gadar, in which he starred in the lead role, became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time after its release. He earned a Filmfare nomination in the ‘Best Actor’ category for his work and it was the 6th time that he had been nominated for this award.
