Tommy Haas Facts

  1. Tommy started playing tennis when he was about 4 years old. He used to employ a wooden plank to hit balls against a wall. His father then began to take him to the facility where he was then working as a tennis coach.
  2. His father, an Austrian, was a schoolmate of the globally recognized actor, film producer, businessman, retired professional bodybuilder, and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.
  3. Tommy won his first youth tournament when he was just 5 years old. About 3 years later, he won his 2nd such tournament, held in Munich, Germany. Between the ages of 11 and 13, he twice won the Austrian Championship, the German Championship, and the European Championship.
  4. These performances impressed renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri who offered the youngster a chance to stay and train at his Bollettieri Academy in Bradenton, Florida, for free. Tommy accepted the offer when he was 11 years old and permanently moved to Florida to train at the academy, about 2 years later.
  5. At the youth tier, he had reached a peak world ranking of number 11 in singles, in 1995. He had also reached number 5 in the junior world doubles rankings.
  6. In 1998 and 2005, he was an integral member of the German squads that won the World Team Cup, an international men’s team championship that was played annually from 1975 until 2012 (except 1976 and 1977). The tournament was generally considered to be the second most prestigious men’s team competition in tennis after the Davis Cup.
  7. In 1999, Tommy reached the final of the Grand Slam Cup, a tennis tournament that was held annually in Munich, Germany, from 1990 through 1999. The event used to invite the best-performing players in that year’s Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open/French Open/Wimbledon Championship/US Open).
  8. After he reached a career-high singles ranking of world number 2 in May 2002, he suffered a serious injury that forced him to miss the entire 2003 season and he, eventually, dropped out of the world rankings. In 2004, he was named the ‘ATP Comeback Player of the Year’ but could not break back into the ‘Top 10’ of the official ATP singles rankings until 2007.
  9. In 2007, Tommy helped Germany reach the semi-final of the Davis Cup (the premier international team event in men’s tennis).
  10. On January 27, 2010, he became an American citizen. He continued to hold German nationality as well and represent that country in international tennis tournaments/events.
  11. Between February 2010 and June 2011, he missed more than 12 months of competitive tennis action for the 2nd time in his career, again dropping out of the world rankings. In 2012, he was named the ‘ATP Comeback Player of the Year’. He clawed his way back to as high as world number 11 in 2013, after reaching the quarter-final of the French Open for the first time in his career.
  12. In April 2017, in the first round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships, Tommy defeated Reilly Opelka (almost 20 years younger than him), in what was his first match on the ATP Tour in 21 months. This victory made him the oldest player to win a match on the ATP Tour since Jimmy Connors in 1995.
