For a country of just over three million people, Wales has an absurd hit rate when it comes to producing actors. Port Talbot alone gave us Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton and Michael Sheen — three men from the same steel town who, between them, have carried a good chunk of 20th and 21st-century screen acting.
Sheen’s been back in the headlines lately, between his BBC work and the Welsh National Theatre company he launched in 2024 after pouring his own money into it. So it felt like a good moment to look at the physical stats of Wales’ biggest exports — heights, reported weights, and the body transformations some of them have put themselves through.
One note before we start: reported weights fluctuate, especially for actors who gain and drop for roles. Treat them as ballpark figures from the most recent credible reporting.
1. Michael Sheen

Born in Newport on 5 February 1969 and raised in Port Talbot, Sheen stands 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) and weighs around 165 lbs (75 kg). Not a big man, but a stage actor’s posture and presence make him read taller on camera.
A detail most people miss: Arsenal offered him a trial at 12. His family wouldn’t relocate to London, so acting won. He’s played Tony Blair three times, Brian Clough in The Damned United, David Frost in Frost/Nixon, and Aziraphale in Good Omens. In 2024, he gave away his personal fortune to become a “not-for-profit actor” and founded the Welsh National Theatre.
2. Catherine Zeta-Jones
The Swansea native, born 25 September 1969, is 5 ft 7 in (170 cm) and has reported in at about 126 lbs (57 kg). She’s danced since childhood, landing the lead in a West End production of 42nd Street as a teenager — exactly the background that paid off decades later in Chicago.
That 2002 musical won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. She filmed numbers including “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango” while pregnant, doing her own dancing throughout. More recently, she’s played Morticia Addams in Wednesday.
3. Anthony Hopkins

Born in Margam, Port Talbot on 31 December 1937, Hopkins is listed at 5 ft 9 in (175 cm). He’s spoken openly about dropping a significant amount of weight in his late 60s and 70s after a doctor’s health warning, cutting sugar and bread and walking daily.
He’s been sober since 29 December 1975. Two Best Actor Oscars — The Silence of the Lambs in 1992 and The Father in 2021, the latter making him the oldest acting winner in Academy history at 83.
4. Christian Bale
Born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire on 30 January 1974, Bale is 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) — and the most extreme body-manipulator here by a mile. He dropped to about 120 lbs for The Machinist (2004) on a near-starvation diet of coffee, apples and tinned tuna.
He then bulked to around 230 lbs for Batman Begins in months, and Christopher Nolan told him to cut back to about 190 lbs because he looked too heavy in the suit. He lost about 30 lbs again for The Fighter and packed on around 45 lbs to play Dick Cheney in Vice.
5. Luke Evans

From Pontypool, born 15 April 1979, Evans is 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) and sits around 185 lbs (84 kg) when lean. He’s one of the more consistently gym-committed names here, posting training clips regularly.
He trained hard for Dracula Untold and The Hobbit trilogy, where he played Bard the Bowman. Before screen work, he spent years in West End musicals including Rent and Avenue Q — the singing voice is real, as Beauty and the Beast proved.
6. Rhys Ifans

Born in Haverfordwest on 22 July 1967 and raised in Ruthin, Ifans is the tallest here at 6 ft 2 in (188 cm), with a lean, wiry frame around 170 lbs (77 kg).
He was a Welsh-language actor first and still works in Welsh. Most know him as Spike in Notting Hill, the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, and Otto Hightower in House of the Dragon.
7. Matthew Rhys
Cardiff-born on 8 November 1974, Rhys is 5 ft 11 in (180 cm) and around 170 lbs (77 kg). Welsh is his first language — he attended a Welsh-medium school before RADA.
He won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama in 2018 for The Americans, a role requiring constant fight choreography and disguise work, then played the title role in HBO’s Perry Mason.
8. Taron Egerton

Born on 10 November 1989 and raised in Aberystwyth and Anglesey, Egerton is 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) and fluctuates between about 165 and 185 lbs depending on the role. He’s a fluent Welsh speaker.
For Rocketman (2019), he sang every Elton John track himself. For Apple’s Black Bird (2022) he put on serious size to play boxer-turned-informant Jimmy Keene, training heavily for the prison-yard physique.
9. Ioan Gruffudd
Born in Llwydcoed near Aberdare on 6 October 1973, Gruffudd is 6 ft 0 in (183 cm) and about 180 lbs (82 kg). Another native Welsh speaker who started on S4C’s Pobol y Cwm.
He broke through as Horatio Hornblower, then played Reed Richards in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films. Recent work includes Liar and the Australian series Harrow.
10. Eve Myles
From Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley, born 8 July 1978, Myles is 5 ft 4 in (163 cm) — the shortest here. She trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
Gwen Cooper made her name internationally in Torchwood, but her best work might be Keeping Faith, shot back-to-back in English and Welsh, which became a genuine phenomenon in Wales.
11. Aneurin Barnard
Born in Ogmore Vale on 8 May 1987, Barnard is 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) and about 155 lbs (70 kg) — a slim build Christopher Nolan used well in Dunkirk, where he played the near-silent Gibson.
He won an Olivier in 2010 for Spring Awakening at 22. Since then: The Goldfinch, Dead Still, and the BBC One series The Girl Before.
The through-line isn’t height or weight — it’s range. From Bale’s 110-lb swings to Hopkins still winning Oscars at 83, Welsh actors treat the body as a tool rather than a brand. And with Sheen building a national theatre from scratch, the next generation has somewhere to start.
