Benny Medina Facts
- Born into a poor immigrant family, Benny had endured a rather rough childhood. His father had abandoned the family and after his mother’s death, he had spent time in several foster homes. He used to often run away from these facilities before he was eventually taken in by his aunt. In his teenage years, he had become involved with local gangs and used to sell cannabis and amphetamines for them.
- He had later become a friend of a wealthy teenager who used to live in Beverly Hills. His family had allowed him to live in a refurbished garage behind their house. The plot of the cult-classic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was loosely based on this phase of Benny’s life.
- He had started his career in the entertainment industry as the lead singer of the R&B/Disco music group Apollo who had released their self-titled debut album in 1979, with Motown Records. He had also co-written 3 tracks for the group. The album was produced by Ray Singleton, the former wife of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records.
- When he was 24 years old, he had been made the head of A&R (Artists and Repertoire) for Motown Records, where he had worked under the mentorship of Berry. Under his tutelage, Benny had written and produced tracks for legendary Motown acts including The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Billy Preston, Rick James, and Teena Marie.
- After his stint with Motown Records, he had switched to Warner Bros. Records where the leadership group had assigned to him the task of building and managing the careers of the company’s urban artists, in the capacity of the Vice-President/General Manager of the organization’s urban music division.
- After quitting Warner Bros. Records, he had collaborated with his longtime friend Jeff Pollack to create Medina/Pollack Entertainment, an organization that eventually grew into a full-service management and production company. In early 2009, he had created his own organization known as The Medina Company.
- He is a godparent to Jennifer Lopez’s fraternal twins Maximilian David Muñiz and Emme Maribel Muñiz.
- In November 2017, actor Jason Dottley had accused him of attempting to r*pe him in December 2008. Benny had vehemently and categorically refuted the allegations leveled against him by Jason.
