Bill Gates is an American business magnate, software developer, investor, author, and philanthropist who has established himself as one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. He co-founded Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1975 and it became the world’s largest personal computer software company. During the course of his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), president, and chief software architect, while also being the largest individual shareholder until May 2014. In 1987, he was included in the Forbes list of the world’s wealthiest people and has since appeared on the list multiple times. Alongside Warren Buffett, he co-founded The Giving Pledge in 2010, a campaign to encourage extremely wealthy people to contribute a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes. As of April 2021, Gates had an estimated net worth of US$146.7 billion, making him the 3rd-richest person in the world.
