Hawke went to the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights and later studied at the West Windsor Plainsboro High School in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.

He graduated from the Hun School of Princeton, New Jersey in 1988. He undertook acting classes at the McCarter Theatre on Princeton campus while studying at Hun. He also pursued a course in acting at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
