Henry Cavill’s Fitness Philosophy
Henry Cavill has built three separate careers off the same body: Superman, Geralt of Rivia, and now Connor MacLeod in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander remake. At 6’1″ and somewhere north of 200 lbs in shooting shape, he’s one of the few leading men who’s genuinely lived in a gym for over a decade rather than crash-dieting for a press tour.
His approach hasn’t changed much since Mark Twight put him through Gym Jones hell for Man of Steel in 2011. Lift heavy, eat enormously, do the boring conditioning, repeat. What has changed is the volume. Cavill has said repeatedly that he wanted to hit a size for Highlander he’d never carried before — and the set photos and gym clips circulating since 2025 suggest he got there.
He’s blunt about how unglamorous it is: waking up early, eating before most people are conscious, and training whether he feels like it or not. No hacks, no supplement miracle, just a lot of years.
Training Split
Cavill runs a push-pull-legs structure, hitting each pattern twice across a six-day week. It’s high-volume bodybuilding work — moderate loads, controlled tempo, short rest — the hallmark of coach Dave Rienzi’s programming.
Day 1: Push (Chest, Shoulders, Triceps)
- Incline Barbell Bench Press — 4 sets x 8-10 reps
- Flat Dumbbell Press — 4 sets x 10-12 reps
- Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press — 4 sets x 10 reps
- Cable Fly (high to low) — 3 sets x 12-15 reps
- Lateral Raise — 4 sets x 15 reps
- Overhead Rope Extension — 3 sets x 12 reps
- Cable Pushdown — 3 sets x 15 reps
Rest: 60-90 seconds on compounds, 45 seconds on isolation work.
Day 2: Pull (Back, Biceps)
- Weighted Pull-Up — 4 sets x 6-8 reps
- Barbell Row — 4 sets x 8-10 reps
- Chest-Supported Row — 4 sets x 10-12 reps
- Lat Pulldown (wide grip) — 3 sets x 12 reps
- Straight-Arm Pulldown — 3 sets x 15 reps
- Barbell Curl — 4 sets x 10 reps
- Hammer Curl — 3 sets x 12 reps
Day 3: Legs
- Back Squat — 5 sets x 5-8 reps
- Romanian Deadlift — 4 sets x 8-10 reps
- Leg Press — 4 sets x 12-15 reps
- Walking Lunge — 3 sets x 20 steps
- Leg Curl — 4 sets x 12 reps
- Standing Calf Raise — 5 sets x 15-20 reps
Rest: 2 minutes after squats, 90 seconds elsewhere. Cavill has joked more than once that leg day is the one he dreads.
Day 4: Push (Volume Focus)
Same movement patterns as Day 1, but machine- and cable-led — pec deck, Smith press, dumbbell-only shoulder work — with reps pushed into the 12-20 range. Joint-friendly, pump-driven.
Day 5: Pull (Volume Focus)
Single-arm dumbbell rows, cable rows, reverse flyes, face pulls, rear-delt work, and heavy arm finishers. Trap work gets folded in here.
Day 6: Legs and Core
Front squats or hack squats, hip thrusts, Bulgarian split squats, plus hanging leg raises, cable crunches, and loaded carries.
Day 7: Rest
Cardio Routine
Cardio stays low-impact and consistent rather than brutal: fasted work on the Concept2 rower or an assault bike in the morning, 20-30 minutes, four or five days a week. Leaning out for camera, he adds steady-state incline walking in the evening — another 20-30 minutes — and pushes toward six sessions a week.
The rower is a long-standing favourite, photographed across multiple productions, and it doubles as back and posterior-chain conditioning.
Role-Specific Training
Highlander (2025-26)
This is the biggest build of his career. Cavill spent months adding mass before cameras rolled, and the sword work is a separate job entirely. Stahelski’s 87Eleven Action Design team runs the fight design, meaning weeks of choreography rehearsal — blade drills, footwork, camera-angle repetition — layered on top of lifting. That hammers grip, forearms, shoulders and obliques in ways no gym program replicates.
Production was pushed back after Cavill picked up a training injury in mid-2025, forcing a rehab block before filming resumed — scaling loads, prioritising hamstring and hip work, and keeping the conditioning base intact while the injury healed.
The Bautista Question
Fans keep pitting Cavill against Dave Bautista, who plays the Kurgan. It’s not a fair comparison and both men know it. Bautista is a former WWE heavyweight who’s carried close to 290 lbs; Cavill is a natural-frame actor who’s spent 15 years adding slabs to a swimmer’s build. He isn’t trying to out-mass Bautista — he’s trying to look like a man who’s been fighting for 500 years.
Superman and The Witcher
For Man of Steel, Mark Twight’s Gym Jones program ran 11 months on heavy squats, deadlifts, presses and punishing metabolic circuits, with Cavill eating up toward 5,000 calories on training days. The Witcher traded some size for agility — Geralt needed to move — with Cavill doing the bulk of his own sword fighting across all three seasons.
Recovery and Flexibility
Sleep is the non-negotiable. On shooting weeks with 4:30 a.m. call times, Cavill front-loads his day so he’s in bed absurdly early. He’s also a heavy user of physiotherapy and sports massage — unavoidable with choreographed fight work six days a week.
Mobility work sits around the lifting rather than in a dedicated session: hip openers before squats, thoracic and shoulder drills before pressing, static stretching afterwards. Away from the gym, he decompresses with Warhammer, PC gaming and long walks with his dog Kal — genuinely how he manages stress across 14-hour shoot days.
Personal Trainer
Dave Rienzi — Dwayne Johnson’s longtime strength coach and the man behind Rienzi Athletics — has programmed for Cavill since 2021, covering The Witcher, Black Adam and the current build. Rienzi’s style is classic hypertrophy: high volume, strict tempo, short rest, and heavy use of cables and machines to keep joints healthy over long training blocks. Mark Twight’s Gym Jones laid the foundation during the Man of Steel years.
