Wyclef Jean Facts

  1. The rapper lived with his grandmother after his parents, who moved to the United States, left him to her care when he was just one-year-old.
  2. He reunited with his family at the age of 13, when in 1982, he immigrated to the United States.
  3. At 6, he started working, and his first job was to milk cows in Haiti village. Wyclef got 5 cents for the chore. He also shepherded cows to earn money.
  4. When he first moved to the United States, he could only converse in French. Wyclef learned how to speak English from rap songs.
  5. It was his mother who first noticed and sensed his interest in music. She gifted him a guitar in hopes that it would keep him occupied from local gang activities.
  6. His music influences as a child were reggae artist Bigga Haitian, MC Tiger Paw Raw and producer Lobster v. Crab.
  7. In his struggling days, Wyclef worked at a local McDonald’s store. He also worked as a cab driver for some time.
  8. He was first offered a record deal when he was a minor. However, the deal couldn’t be signed as his pastor father refused to give his consent as he felt his son was playing the devil’s music.
  9. In the 80s, Jean and his cousin Michel formed the rap band Exact Change. The duo made rap music in 6 languages and later changed the band name to Tranzlator Crew.
  10. They had to rename their band after another band called Translator filed a lawsuit against them. Fugees, which was a short version for refugees was finalized as the new name.
  11. He participated in the America: A Tribute to Heroes benefit concert held after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Wyclef sang Bob Marley’s Redemption Song.
  12. In 2003, Wyclef was a music producer and writer for the soundtrack of Jonathan Demme’s documentary The Agronomist, about the Haitian activist and radio personality Jean Dominique.
  13. Wyclef confirmed his candidature for the Haitian presidential elections in 2010. However, his candidacy got rejected as he hadn’t been a Haitian citizen for the last five years.
  14. In 2012, his book Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story, in which he shared his experience as an immigrant in the United States, was published.
  15. He has established the Clef Kids Foundation, which has worked to support the inner city youth and ensured that they didn’t take the wrong path.
  16. In the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne’s destruction, the Wyclef Jean Foundation provided scholarships to 3,600 students in Gonaïves, Haiti.
  17. His charity was officially closed in 2012 after it was subject to multiple lawsuits in Haiti, over unpaid debts.
  18. Haiti President Michel Martelly bestowed Wyclef Jean with the National Order of Honour and Merit to the rank of Grand Officer in 2011. He received the honor for his dedication to promoting Haiti across the world.
  19. Dwayne Johnson brought him in to create a theme song for his WWF character The Rock. The theme song was titled It Doesn’t Matter.
  20. He got enlisted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2017.
